CIS Returns FAQs

What is the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)?

CIS is a HMRC scheme that requires contractors to deduct money from subcontractor payments and pass these deductions to HMRC. The deductions count as advance payments towards the subcontractor’s tax and National Insurance bill.

Who needs to register for CIS?

Any business that pays subcontractors for construction work must register as a contractor under CIS. Subcontractors who work in the construction industry should also register to avoid the higher 30% deduction rate applied to unregistered subcontractors.

What happens if I miss a monthly CIS return?

HMRC issues automatic penalties for late CIS returns starting at £100 for one month late, rising significantly for prolonged delays. We file every return by the 19th so our clients never face these penalties.

Can subcontractors get their CIS deductions back?

Yes — subcontractors who have had CIS deductions taken can offset these against their Self Assessment tax liability. If deductions exceed the tax owed, HMRC issues a refund. We maximise these claims for all our subcontractor clients.
